"‘And you, Ring-bearer,’ she said, turning to Frodo. ‘I come to you last who are not last in my thoughts. For you I have prepared this.’ She held up a small crystal phial: it glittered as she moved it, and rays of white light sprang from her hand. ‘In this phial,’ she said, ‘is caught the light of Eärendil’s star, set amid the waters of my fountain. It will shine still brighter when night is about you. May it be a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out.’” —The Fellowship of the Ring, “Farewell to Lórien”

This collaboration between Julian the 2nd and Weird Sister Strands is inspired both by the phial that Galadriel gives to Frodo in The Lord of The Rings and by the story of Eärendil as told in the Silmarillion. We co-designed the pendant, drawing on Julian’s unique style and from Tolkien’s drawing of Eärendil’s sigil, in hopes of offering would-be wearers a talisman to help carry them through their own dark times.

We chose labradorite cabochons for the pendant and labradorite beads as the predominate stone in its accompanying strand, because it best captures the glow and the intent of the phial gifted to Frodo. Because, in addition to being a stone thought to sooth anxious hearts and minds, it is also a stone associated in Inuit cultures with the Northern Lights, their legends recounting how bits of the aurora borealis were trapped inside the stone, giving it its unique luster (or “labradoresence”). As a result of these legends, many others the world over have come to associate labradorite with the celestial realm and with the aurora.

The beaded strands are made with high quality gemstone beads (each carefully inspected to ensure perfect shape and lovely flash) and beading wire, which is made of 49 steel wires corded together and coated in durable nylon. They are finished with sterling silver findings and wire guards. With proper care (laying flat to store vs. hanging on a hook; keeping it out of water, etc.) it will last an age.

Curgently we have these as made to order with a 3-4 week turnaround time due to the collaborative effort of making these. As you will see, we also have a few different variations: the double pendant, the sigil pendant on its own, and the smaller “phial” pendant on its own. As is the case with any natural stone, the exact color and flash of the labradorite will vary, but if there’s a particular flash that you’re after, leave that information in a note when you purchase and we will do our best to accommodate. All made-to-order pieces, once ordered, will be hand-made and shipped directly from Leila’s home workshop in the PNW, and will contain some surprises and tokens of gratitude that usually accompany both her and Julian’s pieces when they’re shipped.
